Dusky Grouper

The Dusky Grouper, known as Cerna in Maltese, is a powerful bottom-dweller that lives in deeper waters around the Maltese islands. Though not always the main target, it is sometimes caught while trolling for other large predators like amberjacks or snappers. This impressive fish is known for its fierce strike and strong fight. Once hooked, it often attempts to dive straight back to its rocky hiding spot, trying to cut the line against the seabed. Dusky groupers can grow quite large, commonly reaching 50 to 80 cm, with some even exceeding 1 meter in length. Catching a Dusky Grouper requires strength and quick action, making it a thrilling surprise catch for any angler lucky enough to hook one.
