Scorpionfish

The Scorpionfish is a bottom-dwelling species that can be caught all year round in the deeper waters around Malta. It’s often landed while bottom fishing over rocky seabeds, where it stays well-camouflaged and motionless, waiting to ambush prey. Though not a fast fighter, it is highly prized for its rich flavor and culinary value, especially in traditional fish stews. Scorpionfish usually range from 20 to 40 cm in length. Caution is essential when handling them, as they have venomous spines along their fins that can cause painful stings. Despite this, they remain a rewarding and tasty catch.
